Filing Cabinets

Filing Cabinets are essentially a piece of office furniture and have been used in the office from around 1876. They are most often used as a storage and organisation facility for documents and papers that are hung in either a suspension file or lateral file inside the cabinet or cupboard .  Generally the cabinet will have between 1 and 4 drawers in which the suspension files hang. Lateral files are hung on an extending frame which sits in a cupboard and the frame is pulled out of the filing cupboard to access the lateral files.  The suspension file cabinets (and files) generally used in UK offices are foolscap size. The A4 size filing cabinets are traditionally used in a home-office setting with the corresponding size hanging suspension files.
